what he's saying is that he'd rather loose with dignity than to win by cheating, and cheating is is worse than loosing because you have no dignity or honor and you also aren't honest when you cheat so it's best to loose without cheating because that way you loose with dignity and honesty and it also meant that you tried your hardest at winning and that's all that matters.
