What this quote means to me is that you have to be smart enough to know what's right from wrong, what that means is to know when to do the right things like doing your homework and chores but if you don't then that is pretty much choosing the wrong and that would affect you in a bad way because the consequences will affect you later on in the future and it would make yourself look really bad like lying and cheating instead do what's right like actually paying attention and studying because that way your future can be bright.
